Carrying the nets out

Carrying the nets out

Here the fishers are carrying one of the nets out ready to set them up for the season or perhaps after being repaired. There were ten of these bag nets altogether, five in line with each of the stake nets going out from the shore. The stake nets, we called them fly nets, comprised of three of these bag nets in a row with "leaders" between them to guide the salmon into the entrance of the net. Above the leaders were two ropes, the lower one for the fly fisher to walk on and the upper one to hold on to as he walked out along the nets. He had a large scum (like a great big butterfly net) to lift the fish out through the opening in the top of the net.
