This is the "Nether Kirkyard", the old graveyard at the foot of the cliffs just along from the bothy and below where the Toorie was. I believe the original church of St Grig was founded here about 880AD. St Cyrus, or Ecclesgreig as it was called then, was dedicated by the Bishop of St Andrews in 1242. The graveyard was in regular use until the new church was built up in the village in 1632 when the new graveyard there was the preferred burial place. Some people though were still buried in the old yard, the lawyer and poet George Beattie being one. In fact this graveyard is often locally referred to as "Beattie's Graveyard". No trace remains of the original church. The bungalow that replaced the Toorie hoose can just be seen on the tree covered ledge about half way up the left side of the photo. Back |
