My Yamaha XS750E 1978

Yamaha

A few years ago I bought this Yamaha XS750E locally on ebay. At the time it was really a non-runner as it would only start on full choke and then would not run properly and smoked as if it was on 100 fags a day. I stripped and cleaned the carbs, cleaned the plugs and put some fresh fuel in the tank and she started and ran fine. The only problem was that it still smoked a fair bit, either the valve stem seals have hardened or the rings are sticking. Worst case is that a re-bore is needed although at this mileage I would be surprised and may only need new rings. But you had better assume the worst to be on the safe side!!!

I did have great intentions for this bike but alas other things took priority and virtually nothing has been done to it apart from a few bits and pieces of minor importance. I fitted the small fairing to see how it looked and was going to paint it later when I decided on a colour scheme. The seat cover was re-fitted a bit better and the missing grab rails were bought and fitted. New nuts, studs and seals were fitted where the exhaust pipes fit into the head. I have sorted a couple of things on the electrics so all the lights etc work now. I have fitted a later style air cleaner from a 'Custom 750' with the chrome panels and 'Custom 750' side panels to go with it (that's why the colour dosn't match).

The top two photos are of the bike as I got it and it does look slightly better in the photos than it is in real life. the others with the fairing were taken just before I sold it and show it as it is now. To view a larger image of either of these photos Just click on it.

I had another XS750 which has had the rear seat frame chopped short and a single seat fitted. Also the original headlamp assembly has been changed for twin 5" lamps. It is a bit older and was a runner but has sat around for a couple of years too and will probably suffer from the stale fuel problems as well. It would probably make a good street fighter with a little work or it could be a great trike project.

Well I did keep it for a 'wee while' but unfortunately I did not get much done to it as I was involved with a few other things, the Trident T150 re-build for one. I eventually sold it on to a chap in Aberdeen - who tells mee he to hasn't done much with it either. One day it might just geet back on the road aagain, but don't hold your bteath.
